The "story" of Tohi To symbolise our new brand of organic Belgian chocolates, we thought of a bird. Research through the latest ornithological publications led us to the 'Yariguíes Brush-Finch' (Atlapetes latinuchus yariguierum). The Tohi, a new taxon, was first spotted in 2004 in the Serranía de los Yariguíes, a small, isolated mountain range in the north of Colombia, on the border with Venezuela. This charming, brightly coloured, plump little bird lives in an outstanding tropical habitat. This bird, undiscovered for so long, was named after the Yariguies, a tribe that once lived in this region and fought for freedom against the Spanish invasion. The authenticity of Tohi chocolate perfectly reflects these ancestral peoples and their culture. To protect this unique area in which the Tohi live, the Colombian government has created a national park comprising 78,387 hectares of primitive forest. |

TOHI CHOCOLATE Tohi chocolate is made from purely organic ingredients: organic cocoa beans, organic sugar cane and other ingredients specific to each of the Tohi recipes. In contrast to refined sugar, sugar cane is more easily assimilated by the body. |

ORGANIC The objective of organic is to exclude the use of any chemicals in food production in order to preserve nature. Organic produce is cultivated according to organic farming principles. Organic farming is a specific production system that uses the recycling of organic matter and crop rotation. It excludes the use of genetically modified organisms and any synthetic fertilisers or pesticides. It is always striving for quality and the preservation of ecosystems. Crops vary from one year to the next according to climatic conditions. Flavours and colours vary, significantly or slightly, according to harvest. |

Organic guarantee - Certisys For reasons of integrity, Tohi chocolate requires an absolute guarantee. Certisys is a Belgian organisation that certifies the organic nature of a product. This not-for-profit, government-approved organisation has been operating for over 20 years with the cooperation of a multi-cultural team. It operates in Belgium and Luxembourg and in a worldwide network in partnership with a growing number of farmers and food companies. Beyond their inspection and certification role, they disseminate and update knowledge and tools specific to organic farming. They strive for sustainable development with the conviction that only continuous and long-term investment will contribute toward improving the living environment and to a better respect of the environment. This will enable producers to offer consumers products that are wholesome and safe for both people and nature. Certified foods are guaranteed organic products. Organic farming advocates the recycling of organic matter and crop rotation. Dialogue, confidence and the safety of all, from the producer to the consumer are Certisys's watchwords, words that obviously rely on widespread cooperation and compliance by everyone to the established rules. |

Fair trade - Max Havelaar Max Havelaar is a fair trade certification organisation. Fair Trade is a commercial partnership between farmers and workers in developing countries with the objective of improving their situation. The movement provides special access for North-South exchanges, particularly in the food and raw material sectors (coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, fresh fruits… etc.) as well as crafts. This partnership is based on dialogue, transparency and respect - it puts fairness into international commerce. As such, Max Havelaar does not buy or sell. The credibility of Fair Trade is closely connected with the establishment of stringent criteria and reliable controls for compliance with these criteria. Max Havelaar and its international umbrella association, FLO (Fair-Trade Labelling Organisation), verify these criteria at international level via FLO-Cert, an autonomous and independent inspection organisation. Inspection focuses on working conditions and investments in social, environmental and economic development. At national level, the final stages of the production chain in our country are inspected by Max Havelaar Belgique. |
|||
|
Too often, small farmers in developing countries cannot live off their labour because they are too far removed from the mechanics of major world markets. Fair Trade enables farmers in developing countries to sell their products fairly and acceptably to developed countries and to live from their work, in total autonomy. A good example of a cooperative, this type of trade encourages working as a community. They are guaranteed a fair price and an additional bonus is paid to them to initiate development projects (for schools, farming equipment, health services, roads, etc.). The contract with the importer is long-term, child labour is prohibited, producers work in decent conditions and the ecological is given full consideration. In other words, those that join the Fair Trade system can have more control over their own future. It is this ethos of sharing and caring that we sought to certify the new Tohi products with the Max Havelaar label. |

Sustainable Forestry - FSC FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council - an international, independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that aims to promote the responsible and sustainable management of the world's forests. It was founded in 1993 by forest owners, the timber industry, social groups and environmental conservation associations. | ||
|
The FSC certifies forest operations according to stringent standards and criteria and labels the timber from these forests. A mark of quality, FSC certification assures that a forest is sustainably managed. By using this type of paper, we are taking a positive and constructive approach. We are doing our utmost for the environment and respect the social rights of local communities and forest workers - contributing toward a long-term economic return. In the spirit of the new Tohi brand, respect for the environment is everything and all our packaging and paper come from sustainably and responsibly managed forests. By creating Tohi, we are being a responsible player. |

DOLFIN BECOMES BELGIUM’S FIRST CO2 NEUTRAL CHOCOLATE-MAKER |
||||||||||||||||||||
After several months of a study initiative looking at carbon dioxide emissions, Dolfin is pleased to announce that is has become Belgium’s first CO2 neutral chocolate-maker. This underlines the company’s willingness to assume its social responsibility. The company has been focusing on the problem of greenhouse gas emissions for eight months. The chocolate-maker carried out a study of its climatic impact in order to introduce measures to reduce and offset its carbon-dioxide emissions. An audit of CO2 emissions directly produced by Dolfin’s business activities was carried out in cooperation with the company CO2logic. This auditor is certified by ADEME (Agence de l'Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Energie, France) to use the “Bilan Carbone®” method. Bilan Carbone® is a method of auditing greenhouse gas emissions. Dolfin set itself the objective of reducing emissions by 15%. Through this initiative, the company has taken account of its contribution to the problem of global warming. It is a small step which may make the difference overall. Very aware of this issue, Dolfin wants to meet its social responsibility by introducing measures aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. A social and environmental charter has been drawn up. This charter covers the following aspects. The use of exclusively natural ingredients and cardboard packaging that is only sourced from well–managed forestry areas. Waste is carefully sorted. Dolfin works with a protected workshop for most of its logistical needs. The car park is gradually filling up with more environmentally friendly vehicles. Dolfin is switching to green electricity and an automatic-regulator system has been installed to ensure better management of lighting and heating. The temperature in the workplace has been reduced by 1°C, which results in a fall of +/-7% in emissions. Finally, energy-saving light bulbs have been introduced. In order to offset its remaining CO2 emissions, the company is taking part in a project in Rajasthan in India. This involves recycling agricultural waste from local farms to produce green electricity. As well as reducing CO2, emissions, this project also delivers socio-economic benefits. Jobs are being created and the value of the agricultural waste is enhanced. Families, the farms and companies in the region are provided with a stable supply of green electricity. Making a financial contribution to this project supports economic growth and sustainable development in this part of India. The project has been endorsed by the United Nations and the SGS group (Société Générale de Surveillance). By working towards progressively reducing and offsetting carbon dioxide emissions, Dolfin and its workforce are adopting a philosophy and acquiring experience that will stand them in good stead to meet the challenges of the modern age. |
